Srinagar, Jan 30 (KF): In a significant move, the Jammu and Kashmir government has renamed 33 educational institutions, including schools and colleges, along with roads, to honor “martyrs and eminent personalities” from the state.
The newly named institutions range from Government Degree Colleges to high schools, with each name carefully chosen to commemorate individuals who made meaningful contributions to J&K’s history.
Among the notable changes, Government Degree College (Boys) in Anantnag will now be known as Late Himayun Muzamil Bhat College, recognizing the fallen Deputy Superintendent of Police. Similarly, Government Boys High School in Narwara, Srinagar has been renamed after Late Masroor Ali Wani, a respected Inspector.
The renaming extends beyond educational institutions, encompassing roads, playgrounds, and even chowks across diverse regions like Jammu, Udhampur, Poonch, Kishtwar, and Ramban. Cricket grounds and other public spaces have also been named after individuals who left their mark on the state.
The government order emphasizes the prompt updating of records to reflect these changes, assigning responsibility to concerned Administrative Secretaries. Divisional Commissioners in both Kashmir and Jammu will oversee the implementation within their respective divisions.
To further commemorate the renamings, Deputy Commissioners have been directed to organize appropriate events. This ensures not only a smooth transition but also an opportunity for communities to engage with the stories and legacies behind the new names. (KF)
