International Day against Drug Abuse celebrated at Anantnag

International Day against drug abuse was celebrated with much fervour at GCW Anantnag today. Chairman DDC MY Gorsi was the chief guest on the occassion.

The chairman said that the menace of drugs has to be eradicated completely. He said that several interventions by the Govt to restrict the supply of drugs have been effective in containing the abuse. He appreciated the proactive role being played by Excise Department. He said that to eradicate the business of drugs, we have to eliminate the demand for drugs and this is only possible when the youth realize the detrimental effects abuse has. He said parents and teachers have a vital role to play in this regard.

ADDC Anantnag, Guest of Honor on the occassion said that various departments are spreading awareness against the abuse of drugs. He said that de addiction programs are being run to aid the addicts out of this mess. He called on the society to accept rehabilitated individuals so that people will not refrain from seeking help.

Chief Education Officer Anantnag and DSWO also shared their views.

The students from GCW Anantnag and various schools presented colourful cultural programs, skits, poems and speeches to highlight the menace of drugs. They also protrayed illegal poppy and bhung cultivation and warned the culprits of stern action through their beautiful words.

A felicitation ceremony was held to felicitate best performing students in painting and essay competitions and the officials for their cooperation in organizing the function.

The program was attended by Sameer Ahmad, ETO South, Jan Mohammad DEPO, DIO, staff and students of GCW, members of the media fraternity and civil society.

Prior to this essay and painting competition was held on the subject at various schools. This was followed by rallies to spread awareness against drugs.

The program was held at all sub divisions of Anantnag and presided over by local administration. (KF)
