Srinagar, April 21: In a major step towards bolstering food security for economically disadvantaged citizens, the Department of Food, Civil Supplies & Consumer Affairs (FCS&CA) has started the distribution of additional free ration to Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY) families across Jammu and Kashmir.
The initiative follows a formal order issued by the department after an announcement by the Hon’ble Chief Minister, Jenab Omar Abdullah Sahab, during the recent budget session.
According to the Minister for Food, Civil Supplies & Consumer Affairs, Satish Sharma, the move is aimed at supporting the poorest sections of society during challenging times. “Each beneficiary under the AAY category will now receive a minimum of 10 kilograms of foodgrains, in addition to their regular entitlements,” the minister said.
Describing the scheme as a reflection of the government’s commitment to social justice and public welfare, the minister lauded the efforts of the department’s officers and field staff for ensuring swift implementation.
He also urged AAY beneficiaries to collect their additional entitlements from the nearest ration depots or Fair Price Shops.
The AAY scheme targets the most economically vulnerable households, and the additional ration is expected to provide much-needed relief amid rising food insecurity and inflationary pressures.
